How This Works
Window costs include supply, fit and removal of old frames. uPVC is the most affordable and lowest maintenance. Timber is more expensive and requires regular painting/staining. Aluminium allows slimmer frames and larger panes but costs more. All replacement windows must meet Building Regulations Part L (thermal performance) — ask for FENSA or CERTASS certification from your installer.
Standard replacement windows in the same material and style do not need planning permission — they are permitted development. However: listed buildings need Listed Building Consent for any window changes. Conservation areas require Article 4 direction to be checked (some require matching traditional styles). If you are installing significantly larger or differently-shaped openings, planning permission may be needed. Always check with your local authority if in any doubt.
