How This Works
Damp treatment costs depend heavily on the actual cause — correctly diagnosing the type of damp is critical. Rising damp treatment involves injecting a chemical DPC into the mortar course; existing plaster must be removed and replaced with salt-resistant render. Penetrating damp is addressed through repointing, render repair or waterproof coatings. Condensation requires ventilation improvements.
Rising damp appears at low level (up to 1m from floor), has a distinct "tide mark" and typically contains salt deposits (white crystalline patches). It is relatively rare. Condensation appears on cold surfaces, is worst in winter, has black mould growth and often affects corners and north-facing walls. Condensation is far more common and much cheaper to fix (better ventilation, extract fans, insulation). Get an independent survey from a RICS surveyor rather than a damp-proofing company — they have no interest in overselling treatment.
